Types of phototherapy - 6th December 2011
There are three types of phototherapy
Broadband UVB is the oldest type. Side effects are that it causes redness, takes many sessions and it can be ineffective in difficult cases.
The second type is PUVA. You take a pill to sensitise the skin before being exposed to UVA light. This method is effective, but is more likely to cause premature ageing of the skin and an increased risk of skin cancer.
The third type is narrowband UVB phototherapy. This is the cutting edge technology. This works rapidly, treating both vitiligo and psoriasis. It has a lower risk of causing skin cancer, premature ageing of the skin or other side effects. Patients prefer narrowband UVB treatment over PUVA treatment because they do not have to take medications or experience unpleasant side effects such as nausea. Phototherapy is generally employed for moderate to severe psoriasis.
