Treating Psoriasis - 14th November 2011

What is Psoriasis?

Both Psoriasis and vitiligo are similar in that they are caused by a hyperactive immune system. In psoriasis this causes the skin to grow much faster than normal.

Your body produces new skin cells in the deepest layer of the skin. These cells gradually move up through the layers until they reach the surface. Then they die and flake off. The whole process normally takes 21 to 28 days. In psoriasis, this process speeds up and only takes 2 to 6 days. As a result, cells that are not fully mature build up rapidly on the surface of the skin, causing red, flaky, crusty patches covered with silvery scales. These patches are not easily shed.
